ERIC BAILLIES
Photographer
Fascinated by the history of photography, Eric Baillies uses alternative photographic processes from the nineteenth-century to create one-of-a-kind photographs that speak of days gone by. Carting around a large-format camera, he painstakingly considers composition, lighting, and other conditions; each negative he creates is handmade and keenly susceptible to processing mishaps or handling errors. Once the capture is made, Baillies uses a number of different processes learned from experts at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, New York to produce images of startling clarity and tonal range. For the series Shadows of Milwaukee, Baillies sought to capture “how a place reflects back into its community intentional acts of design, emotion, and architecture.” The resulting works include cyanotypes (a process routinely used by engineers to create blueprints), salt prints (one of the oldest photographic processes first invented by William Henry Fox Talbot in the 1830s), and collodion chloride prints (paper coated with egg white containing light-sensitive silver chloride exposed to light). In today’s world where every moment is captured by the simple push of a button, Baillies’ work stands as a testament to the physical objecta rare occurrence considering that most images made today will exist only in digital format.
AN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION OF ART AT SAINT JOHN’S
What do you get when you combine 155 years of art lovers, connoisseurs and aficionados? A significant collection of truly remarkable artwork! These generous individuals have shared their discerning appreciation of fine art and have been instrumental in the establishment of our impressive collection on display on the Town Center. Saint John’s had a vision of creating a curated Artwalk to highlight and showcase Saint John’s art collection. The undertaking of this project was managed by Erin Burke, Saint John’s Director of LifeStreams and took eight months of photography, research, appraisal and cataloging of over 600 works of art.
Erin notes, “Preserving and documenting Saint John’s art portfolio and collection is very important. As we work through this project, we are gathering stories, historic documents and information that will live with us for generations to come. The Artwalk offers a peek into the collection and celebrates the beauty and vibrancy that is Saint John’s On The Lake. We honor the creativity and expression of the artists as they draw out emotions when you walk these halls.” The archive is a living document updated with each new work donated and catalogs the movement of art throughout our campus.
Each piece and/or collection has a unique QR code transporting the individual into Saint John’s catalog of art which is searchable by artist and collection. The catalog guides the visitor to the location on Saint John’s campus where the art is currently on display.
