The Winter Blues

For this week of Healthy Mind, we’re sharing why Healthy Mind practices are so essential in the winter.

Seasonal Affective Disorder and The Winter Blues affect many Americans. Colder weather and less daylight hours can make us feel less motivated and less engaged in everyday life. People living in northern states (such as us here in Wisconsin) can be more affected by these disorders. Symptoms of SAD can include feeling sad, a loss of interest in activities you normally enjoy, changes in sleep & appetite, and loss of energy.

The good news is there are ways to get ahead of these seasonal mental health challenges:

  • Make a habit of a daily walk to help get fresh air while you exercise.
  • Add vitamin D into your diet since we receive less natural sunlight in the winter months.
  • Plan fun activities and try to stick to those commitments.
  • Get social with friends and family to help boost your mood.
  • Make sure you try and stick to an exercise routine to get some healthy physical stimulation.
  • Reach out to your support network to let them know how this season may affect you and you can receive support if you need it.

Remember, if you need help from a professional, don’t be afraid to ask!
