For this week of Healthy Mind, we’re sharing the importance of embracing and cultivating joy.
Joy is an emotion that reflects a long term state of feelings of inner peace of contentment, and takes more time to cultivate than happiness. In addition to the emotional benefits of experiencing joy, numerous studies suggest that joy can predict a lower heart rate and blood pressure as well as stronger immune systems.

- Look for meaning and lessons you can learn.
- Find joy in small moments like your favorite food, song, or beautiful piece of art.
- Make room/time for a passion or hobby.
- Be mindful in the present moment.
- Choose authenticity and be true to yourself.
- Volunteer your time.
- Reconnect with nature.
- Make and seek opportunities for laughter.
- Seek out positive people.
- Get creative: color, draw, dance, play an instrument.
Try this week to do at least three of the above tips to help cultivate joy. For an added challenge, try to smile and say hello at everyone you see today. Studies show that all of the positive benefits of embracing joy may result in longer life spans in those individuals. If you are finding it especially difficult to embrace joy, try to physically change your state by getting up and getting into action!
